Annie Heacock July 18, 1866 The Pennsylvania Freedmen's Bulletin
|
Notes:
This letter by Annie Heacock written on July 18, 1866 to Robt. R. Corson, Esq., Corresponding Secretary of the
Pennsylvania Freedmen's Relief Society was published in the October 1866 edition of the Pennsylvania
Freedmen's Bulletin. It provides information on education, a sewing school and labor in the island.
The task system mentioned was a slavery system that allowed the workers to complete tasks for the day and
then their labor was finished. This is in competition with the gang labor system that simply worked slaves from
sun-up till sun-down.
