| This certificate, a certified copy of the original, was requested by the General Rufus Saxton originally to help former slaves renew marriages that they had contracted in slavery. This certificate was used by Sallie Jackson in her pursuit of a pension for her late husband Nathaniel Jackson. No one apparently noticed the wording of the certificate and no mention was made of the earlier slave marriage. |
