St. Augustine's First Recorded Baptism
On the tenth day of June of the year one thousand, five hundred and ninety four, I, Diego Escobar
de Zambrana, pastor and vicar of the Provinces of Florida, City and Fort of St. Augustine, by
(appointment of ) Master Don Fray Antonio Diaz de Salcedo, Bishop of Cuba and, because of
proximity, of these provinces, baptized and anointed with oil and chrism Maria, legitimate daughter
of Juan Jimenez de la Cueva and of Maria Melendez, his wife; her godparents were Adrian de
Canizares and Maria Ruiz, his wife, all of them residents of this city; in witness whereof, I signed my
name; done as above.
