| 1. There are however numerous references to persons who were slaves before this date. In 1636: "Be it enacted by the lord proprietor of this province and with advice and approbation of the freement of the same that all persons being Christians (slaves excepted) of the age of eighteen years or above brought into this province at the charge and adventure of some other person shall serve such person for the full term of four years."
