The second and final Governor of East Florida from 1775 till the end of the British period in 1783.

General Tonyn was born in Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumbria. His father Colonel Charles Tonyn was
in the 6th Inniskillen Dragoons.

Patrick Tonyn started in the 6th Dragoons as a Captain. In 1758 he fought at Miden and Wetter in
Germany. He was made a lieutenant-colonel of the 104th regiment in 1761.

He is known especially for his role in helping the Minorcians escape from
New Smyrnia.
