Return to Statehood
1858 and Misc. Slave and
Free Black Permission Slips
St Augustine 30th Nov 1840

Colonel Twiggs
2d Dragoons

Esteemed Sir:

I a directed by the Mayor and Aldermen in Council assembled to inform you that they have received your letter of the 8th
November 1840, and that the whole matter alluded to in it, was referred to, and taken up the Grand Jury.

The investigation by that Body has resulted in an indictment against Moses a free black man; and the release from confinement of
Negroes George and Joe belonging to Mr. I M Hanson.

In returning thanks to you for your attention in bringing to the notice of the authorities of this City anything by which the Guilty may be
found out; I beg leave to call to your recollection, that in all the excursions of wild Cat the Chief actor was a Mulatto fellow of the
name of Joe Walles; he is of middle size, thick set, and stutters, and is a runaway from Misquito county.

My dear Sir; the highest considerations of Justice recommend that the said Mulatto fellow Joe Walles should be taken alive; have
him alive, and we shall know the Guilty in this and other places.

Wishing you success

I remain truly

your obt. Servt.
